The Norwich Farmers' Market is seeking a part-time Market Assistant to help manage the Norwich Farmers' Market on Saturdays from May through October.
Overview:
The Assistant Farmers Market Manager will be responsible for helping the Market Manager with all aspects of market operations during the season. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people, including: customers, vendors, volunteers, health inspectors, as well as the market manager and NFM Board.
The Assistant Farmers Market Manager will help coordinate market set-up and/or break-down, assist with social media and general outreach to promote the market, operate the EBT (food stamps) program and crebit card machine, organize POP Club kids' activity, answer customer questions, sell NFM merchandise, and assist with the market’s programs and special events.
General Requirements:
The Assistant Market Manager must be available during all market hours throughout the season and be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic advocate of the local food movement and Vermont and New Hampshire agriculture. The Assistant Market Manager must be reliable, self-motivated, outgoing and friendly, and have good communication and customer service skills.
Responsibilities:
MARKET OPERATIONS • Arrive at market 1 hour before opening to coordinate market set-up and stay until market ends. • Set up NFM tent, table and display. • Place directional signs promoting the market around the community at key locations prior to opening on each market day, and remove those signs at the close of market. • Coordinate vendor parking and set-up, ensuring vendors are in the correct space. • Staff the NFM tent providing information to customers, sell NFM merchandise, manage POP Clubs, and run the EBT/Credit Card machine.
GENERAL MARKET SUPPORT • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the market manager, vendors, customers, community members, and NFM Board members. • Assist vendors, community representatives and customers by providing market-related information, conflict resolution and general aid as appropriate. •
OUTREACH AND MARKETING • Promote the market through social media. Contribute to weekly email newsletters and promotion throughout the community. • Assist with the development and coordination of special events – including educational programming, composting at the market, special events at the market, cooking demonstrations, and musical performances.
Hours and Compensation:
5-8 hours per week, Saturdays 8am- 1pm, plus additional time for outreach and marketing work.
